Back to School Doesn't Have to Break the Budget

26 July 2026

Back to School Doesn't Have to Break the Budget

For many families, August is a month of excitement, but it can also bring financial pressure.

From uniforms and school shoes to books, technology and after-school activities, the costs of preparing for a new school year can quickly add up. It's often not one large expense, but a series of smaller purchases that make this time of year one of the most expensive for parents.

Recent research from the Irish League of Credit Unions found that the average cost of sending a child to primary school is now €1,607, while the average cost for secondary school has risen to €2,142. It's no surprise that many parents are carefully planning their budgets before the school term begins.

It's Never Just the Uniform

When people think about back-to-school shopping, they often picture uniforms and stationery. In reality, the list is much longer.

Parents may also be budgeting for:

  • School shoes and sports gear
  • Books and stationery
  • Laptops and devices
  • School bags and lunch boxes
  • School contributions
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Transport costs

For many families, these expenses all arrive within a few short weeks.

Your Not Alone

If you're finding the back-to-school costs a challenge this year, you're certainly not alone.

The same ILCU research found that many parents have had to make difficult choices to manage these expenses, including cutting back on extracurricular activities, school trips and replacing school items.

At Palmerstown Credit Union, we understand these pressures because we're part of the same community. We know every family wants to give their children the best possible start to the school year.

Five Ways to Help Manage Back-to-School Costs

1. Do a Home Audit First

Before heading to the shops, take a few minutes to go through last year's school supplies. School bags, lunch boxes, water bottles, pencil cases and stationery are often still in great condition. You may even find unused copybooks, calculators or art supplies tucked away in a drawer. Reusing items where possible can help reduce costs and keep perfectly good products out of landfill.

2. Leave the Children at Home (If You Can!)

It might not always be possible, but tackling the back-to-school shop without the children can help you stay focused on what they actually need. Shopping with a list makes it easier to avoid impulse purchases and those tempting "Can I have this too?" moments.

3. Compare Before You Buy

It's worth shopping around before making larger purchases. Items like school bags, calculators and laptops are often available at different prices depending on the retailer, with some offering back-to-school promotions or bundle deals. Spending a few extra minutes comparing prices can make a real difference to your overall budget.

4. Think Long-Term

While it can be tempting to choose the cheapest option, investing a little more in quality items can often save money in the long run. Durable school shoes, backpacks and lunch boxes are more likely to last the full school year, helping you avoid the cost and inconvenience of replacing them halfway through the term.

5. Don't Leave It Until the Last Weekend

Shopping early gives you more time to compare prices, spread the cost and take advantage of special offers. You'll also benefit from a wider choice of sizes and stock, helping you avoid the stress of searching for sold-out uniforms or school shoes during the busy last-minute rush.
